This is so cool! I had never heard of these PlayPumps, but came across them while looking up articles in National Geographic Kids (to use in ESL lessons). They are just like equipment we all played on as kids, only they pump water for an entire village! Kind of interesting that we all ran around and around and around these kinds of things as kids and they could have used our energy for something useful!

Having these PlayPumps near the villages eliminates the need for women and girls to walk long distances and haul back 40-pound buckets of water. They say the average distance an African villager walks to draw water from wells is five miles. I normally have to walk about 10 feet to the sink. Kind of puts things in perspective, huh?

Anyway, you can read more about them (and donate) at the PlayPumps International site. Cool!
